SC1100 CSA #7 single tied by the large single rim Charleston SC CDS 21 MAR 186-. Addressed to Miss Jane Ann Adger (Care of) Rev J. B. Adger DD, Pendleton SC. The stamp underpaid the 10c rate. A handstamp "5" was applied most likely in Charleston to assess 5c postage due for the underpayment. Adversity Cover made from a printed but unused shipping form. Displayed flapped up from the lower left corner. Minor corner wear at the upper left, otherwise a Very Fine cover.

Rev John Bailey Adger (1810-1899) was a prominent Presbyterian minister in South Carolina. The addressee, Jane Ann Adger (1822-1899), was his sister who never married. The Adger family was large and had acquired their family wealth in shipping and banking in Charleston in the pre-war decades. The sender is not identified but most likely is from a family member in Charleston.
