Folded Letter written on a lined Ledger Page. The letter is datelined "Packet May 10th 1864"
which means that the letter was written on board a packet boat. Part
personal and part business, the letter does not name the packet but
does mention that there are packts on the river as the writer asks if a
few pounds of butter can be sent by the next packet. A CSA #11
stamp was used on the back to seal the letter and was partially torn
away in opening. The letter entered the mails at Howardsville, Va with
the BLUE Howardsville, Va CDS
used to cancel the stamp dated 10 MAY, the same day the letter was
written. This letter is from a James River packet as Howardsville in
Nelson County is on the James River and a port on the Kanawha Canal.
Addressed to Mr. Phil B. Cahill, Willow Bank (Va) also in Nelson County. |
