MS313 CSA #3 (margin close at the top and small faults) with a light pen cancel used as a Canton, Miss Drop Letter without the Canton postmark.  Handstamp NOV on the face of the cover is a Canton mark.  The cover is a folded telegram complete on the printed South Western Telegraph Company telegram form datelined “By Telegraph from Mobile Oct 10, 1864.”  Telegram was sent from Mobile to Canton and then posted as a Drop Letter in Canton addressed to Maj Wofford, Canton (Miss).  The stamp was used to seal the folded telegram.  Major Jefferson L. Wofford (later Lt Col and Col) (1834-1911) at this time was a commissary officer on the staff of Lt Gen Stephen D. Lee who commanded Hood’s former corps in the Army of Tennessee.  The telegram reads “At what price will you haul a lot of tobacco say fifty-five hundred pounds from Canton to Shreveport Dr Richardson refers me to you. J J Creed 25pd.”  The price for the telegram was appparently 25c.  Most unusual usage telegram drop letter which is not listed in the Warren 2c Green census.  The item had significant condition problems but has since been professionally restored and is ready to exhibit.  CSA Certificate 2009 which pictures the cover prior to restoration. $2,500.00
