| MS237 | Handstamp PAID 5(ms) with the Horn Lake, Miss balloon CDS 31 OCT (1861) Dietz Type I 5(ms). Folded Letter Complete with Military Address to Mr. George M. Tate Care of Capt Nelms, 9th Miss Regiment, Warrington, Florida. The letter is a quite lengthy family letter but does have war references “...we have just heard of a glorious victory achieved by the Southeners near Leesburg Virginia there were four thousand against twelve thousand Yankees the papers say only 30 or 40 on our side killed of the Federals fifteen hundred killed wouned or drowned in the Potomac River...expect another battle at Manassas...might decide the contest between North and South.” George M. Tate later had service in Co A 10th Miss Inf and was captured as a POW at Savannah, Ga 1/12/1863 dying in prison at Alton, Ill of typhoid fever 2/26/1863. Edge fault bottom left and few internal folds reinforced with archival tape. Scarce usage and a good letter. CSA Certificate from 2004. | $475.00 |
