CSA Mississippi Cover MS236

MS236 Handstamp PAID (no rate) with the Corinth, Miss balloon CDS 30 MAY (1861). Cover is dated 2 days prior to the 1 JUN 1861 first day of the CSA Postal Service. This cover actually falls into the USA Used in the CSA period, but the Corinth Postmaster anticipated the changeover and simply handstamped the cover “PAID” with no rate so as to ensure no confusion with regard to payment and delivery. This is seen in other Corinth covers known with the same usage just before the changeover. The original letter remains with the cover and confirms the 1861 usage. The letter is very short from Thomas H. Dees writing home to his father F. T. Dees, Plattsburg, Miss. Thomas Dees was a private in Co F 14th Miss Inf mustering at Corinth at this time. His letter states “...they are about five thousand soldiers here and still a coming we not have any uniforms yet...” Private Dees later transferred to the 40th Miss Inf and was listed as severely wounded during the Vicksburg Campaign with no further record. Very Fine. $750.00
