| MSC149 | “Southern Confederacy” Illustrated Advertising Cover which easily could be mistaken for a CSA Patriotic Cover. The “Southern Confederacy” was the name of an Atlanta, Ga newspaper which began publication in February 1859. Elaborate advertising scene in red reflecting Industry, Commerce, and Agriculture. The cover is from the Alexander H. Stephens Correspondence addressed to the Vice-President in Crawfordville, Ga. The cover was handcarried outside the postal system and has no postal markings. Period notation at the lower left in the same hand as the address “From the Editor of the So Confederacy Atlanta, Ga.” The backflap is still attached which is unusual for this correspondence. Short summary concerning the contents is present on the back as usual “J. Hendley Smith Atlanta concerning publication of AHS speeches.” The period notation on the reverse dates the cover to June 1861. Minor reduction at the top and a small top right edge repair and a top right corner repair with a little right edge toning which do not detract from an otherwise very clean appearing cover. This design is scarce with only a handful of covers known and is one of the most well-known of all the Confederate Advertising Covers. | $1,800.00 |
