| GA841 | Quitman, Ga PAID 5 with the rate handstamp inside the CDS in place of the month and day logos. This was an improvised device put into service by the Confederate postmaster at Quitman, Ga to accomodate the CSA 5c rate and quickly became faulty. The date was written in manuscript outside the postmark. The manuscript date on this cover is somewhat faded and is not readily apparent. Addressed to Mr. Irba Scott, Eattenton PO (sic) Putnam Co., Georgia. The cover is a pre war illustrated Campaign Cover from the election of 1860 with elaborate portrait design of John C. Breckinridge who was one of the presidential candidates in 1860 (Breckenridge / Lane 1860 Campaign Cover). Printer’s Imprint “S. Raynor Envelope Manufacturer New York” and Slogan ”The Constitution and the Equality of the States.” John C. Breckinridge of Kentucky, Vice-President of the United States, would join the Confederacy and serve as a CSA General in the Confederate Army and as the last Confederate Secretary of War in 1865. A pre war illustrated Campaign Cover showing Confederate usage is quite a scarce item. Cover has been lightly cleaned professionally and also has a few minor professional edge repairs to a Very Fine appearance. | $2,000.00 |
