CSA #8 Vert Strip of Three plus Two Singles (margins just a little
irregular and stamps with small faults which do not detract) tied to each
other and to the cover by three strikes of the small double circle Macon, Ga
CDS 25 MAR. Period docketting at left states 1865 usage very near the end
of the war. The five stamps were affixed for the 10c standard rate but
instead the cover was used locally with Military Address to Capt J. C.
Wrenshall, Engineers Corps, Macon, Ga thus making it a most unusual
Overpaid Drop Letter. The addressee was a staff officer in the Nitre and
Mining Bureau. Very clean coarse brown paper cover which appears
homemade only slightly reduced at the right not affecting anything and a
trivial corner edge repair at the upper left. Nothing detracts from an overall
Very Fine appearance. I have never seen another example of five 2c Red
Brown stamps used as an overpaid drop letter and am not sure that any
others even exist. Cover is ready to exhibit. CSA Certificate 1994
confirming 1865 overpaid drop letter usage.
