Handstamp PAID 10 with the Social Circle, Geo CDS Dietz Type IA all in RED 14 DEC (1861). Blue lined notebook paper which appears to have been used as a wrapper type cover with a Military Address to Capt W. A. Hawkins, Traveler’s Repose, (West) Va Co A 12th Reg Ga Volunteers. Traveler’s Repose is in Pocahontas County which would later be incorporated into the Union State of West Virginia. Willis Alston Hawkins (1825-1886) was a lawyer from Americus and was a delegate to the Georgia Secession Convention. He began service as Captain of Co A 12th Ga Inf 6/15/1861 and was later promoted Major and Lt Col of the regiment but resigned 1/24/1863. After the war, he served as a justice of the Georgia Supreme Court. Minor edge tape stain at top center, otherwise Very Fine with excellent red strikes of the postal markings.
