CSA Georgia Cover GA738

GA738
CSA #5x1 Athens 5c Purple Provisional two singles (both stamps are Type I and both have large margins with the right stamp slightly overlapping the left stamp) cancelled by light Grids with the Athens, Ga PAID CDS at the lower left 3 JAN (1862). Cover is from the Cobb Correspondence addressed to Lieut John A. Cobb, Cobb Georgia Legion, Yorktown, Virginia. John Addison Cobb (1838-1925) at this time was a staff officer ADC to his father, Col (later Maj-Gen) Howell Cobb. Cover is very clean with a minor reduction at the left. The cover is considered to be one of the finest examples of a double rate franking of the Athens Provisional stamps still extant. PF Certificate 2007 which notes a very trivial corner crease on the left stamp and equally trivial light toning at top left.
