CSA #4 two singles
(stone not
identified) (margins a little irregular with the left stamp showing
some preaffixing faults) tied together and to the cover by the Franklin, Geo
CDS 30 JUL 1862. There is a second strike of the same CDS at the lower
left. Coarse brown paper cover appears to be a homemade adversity
cover. Addressed to Mr. Irby H. Scott, Eatonton, Ga. Irby Hudson Scott
was a Georgia plantation owner. His tombstone says he had service in Co
H 5th Ga Inf,
but his name does
not appear on the company roster. The addressee’s son was Irby Goodson
Scott (1840-1925) who had service as a Lieutenant in Co G 12th Ga Inf
and served throughout the war (wounded at 2nd Manassas 8/30/1862).
Lieut Scott was a prolific letter writer during the war, and his
letters have been published. Another son of the addressee was
Private
Nicolas Ewing “Bud” Scott (1845-1864) who served in the same unit as
his older brother and was killed-in-action at Spotsylvania Court House
(Va) on 5/10/1864 and is buried at the Spotsylvania Confederate
Cemetery. Clean cover with a minor edge repair at the lower left. |
