#4b Stone 2 Horz Pair Light Milky Blue (4-Margin but
with minor
corner faults upper right and lower left and affixed on the reverse to
seal the
backflap of a small cover) tied by a PAID
handstamp and two strikes of a
Circle “5” handstamp used as
cancelers. No postmark or manuscript
markings to indicate the origin of this cover and no date other than to
say that it most likely comes from somewhere in Virginia.
Military Address
on the other side of the cover to Mr. Casper C. Henkel, 37th Regt Va
Vol
3rd Brigade Jackson’s Division. The addressee was the
regimental
surgeon for the 37th Va Inf throughout the war. Cover slightly reduced
to
the left of the stamps into a part of the address due to a somewhat
rough
opening along that side. Still a very interesting and unusual use of
the
handstamps which were normally used on stampless covers. Cover
originally included in the exhibit to show the stampless cover
handstamp
devices used to cancel the stamps. This cover was used as an
illustration on
Page 79 of Gen Bush’s Fancy and Unusual Cancel book. |
