#1 Stone 1 Plated as Position 36 (margin just in at
the top and the lower right corner and showing a somewhat dry printing)
canceled with a handstamp “5” in a circle
which is a Mobile, Ala mark Dietz Type B.
No postmark on the cover. This is actually a folded letter
complete addressed to Messers Boykin & McRae, Mobile, Ala. The
letter
(business letter concerning a note that is due) is datelined
“Elm Bluff, Ala
26 MAR 1862.” Elm Bluff was in Dallas County well
north of Mobile near
Selma. Letter was evidently handcarried into Mobile and dropped at the
Mobile post office where the postmaster treated it as an Overpaid
Drop
Letter and simply canceled the stamp with whatever
handstamp device came
to hand which in this case was the “Circle 5”
normally used as a Due
handstamp. Very Fine Appearance. Cover originally included in the
exhibit
to show the Handstamp “5” used to cancel the stamp. This cover was used
as an illustration on Page 71 of Gen Bush’s Fancy and Unusual Cancel
book. |
