CB37 CSA #11 (AD) (4-Margin) tied by the Richmond, Va CDS Powell Type 5h 28 SEP (1864). Also canceling the stamp is the very scarce Richmond, Va Large Grid. This Richmond Large Grid (10 Bars) is very distinctive and is a pre war mark that was only very rarely used. Currently there are only five covers recorded showing CSA usage of this large grid, and this is one of only two where the grid actually cancels a stamp. The other three show the large grid obliterating a handstamp rate applied in error. Cover addressed to John H. Newton, Athens, Georgia. Endorsed at upper left “E. D. Newton Surg PACS (Provisional Army of the Confederate States).” Dr. E. D. Newton was the Regimental Surgeon for Cobb’s Georgia Legion. Backflap opening tears otherwise Very Fine. Ex-Weil. Cover originally included in the exhibit to show the scarce Richmond Large Grid used as a cancel. This cover was the subject of a Confederate Philatelist article in the Jul-Aug 1974 issue and can also be found as an illustration on Page 103 of Peter Powell’s book on the Richmond CSA postmarks.
