homemade adversity cover addressed to C. Y. Thomas Esq, Agt Henry Co.,
Martinsville, Va. The addressee, C. Y. Thomas, was a prominent Virginia
politician and a staunch Unionist but served Virginia as the
Commonwealth
Attorney during the war years and also as an agent distributing food
and
supplies in Henry County to needy familes of Confederate soldiers.
After
the war, Grant offered him the Military Governorship of Virginia, but
he
refused. Minor backflap opening tear but otherwise Very Fine. Cover
originally included in the exhibit to show an example of the manuscript
postal markings canceling the stamp.
