CB31 CSA #1 Stone 1 Plated as Position 46 (4-Margin) tied by a full strike of the Fredericksburg, Va PAID CDS 22 DEC (1861). Military Address to Mr. L. M. Blackford 1st Brigade Army of the Potomac Corps No. 2, Winchester, Va. Lancelot Minor Blackford (1837-1914) enlisted in the Va Rockbridge Light Artillery 9/2/1861. He was commissioned 3/20/1863 and served as an advocate in the military court system of Longstreet’s Corps and later transferring to 24th Va Inf as the regimental adjutant 12/5/1864. Docketting indicates cover was sent by John Minor, and period pencil notation reads “the last letter ever recd from my dear uncle.” Cover originally included in the exhibit to show the Fredericksburg mixed font postmark (“urg” is in very small letters compared to the rest of the town name) and also a PAID within the CDS. This is a scarce Fredericksburg, Va postmark as Gen Bush’s research indicates less than a dozen covers recorded with this particular postmark canceling a stamp. This cover was used as an illustration on Page 67 of Gen Bush’s Fancy and Unusual Cancel book and again as an illustration on Page 289 of the Collector’s Guide to Confederate Philately. SOLD
