#11 (AD) (margin close at left and minor faults) tied
by a handstamp PAID cancel with
manuscript “Waverlie, Va February 5” at
the upper left. Obscure usage from Rockingham County. Postmaster
used a handstamp device to cancel the stamp as apparently had one
available, but Waverlie was too small to have its own steel rimmed
postmark. Orange paper cover addressed to J. Y. Menefee Esqr,
Washington Rappahannock Co., Virginia. Left edge repaired to exhibit
quality. Cover originally included in the exhibit to show a handstamp
PAID
device used to cancel the stamp with a manuscript town postal marking.
This cover was used as an illustration on Page 77 of Gen Bush’s Fancy
and
Unusual Cancel book and again as an illustration on Page 285 of the
Collector’s Guide
to Confederate Philately.
