CB18
CSA #6 Horz Pair (margin just barely clipped at the lower left corner and a little toning at the left upper corner) canceled by two strikes of a small handstamp (appears to be typeset) “PAID 10.” In the center of the cover is a full strike of the small single rim Weatherford, Tex CDS. This is one of only two covers currently recorded from Weatherford, Tex showing this unusual “PAID 10” cancelation. Folded letter complete written on a lined Ledger Page and datelined “Parker Co., Texas July 8th 1864.” Military Address to James C. Cox, Co A Griffins Batt, Sabine Pass, Texas. The unit was the 21st Tex Inf Battalion guarding the Texas Gulf Coast and commanded by Major (later Lt Col) William H. Griffin. The letter itself is of historical importance as it describes Indians said to be dressed in Yankee uniforms raiding a salt works and killing a woman, a boy, and taking hostages. A full transcript of the letter is included. Very Fine Cover. Cover originally included in the exhibit to show the handstamp “Paid 10” canceling the stamps. This cover was used as an illustration on Page 80 of Gen Bush’s Fancy and Unusual Cancel book and again as an illustration on Page 285 of the Collector’s Guide to Confederate Philately.
