Chattanooga, Ten CDS 20 DEC (1863).
Addressed to Mrs. E. M. Davis,
Pratville, Ala. Cover was sent by Private Eli M. Davis of Co
F 45th Ala
Inf (an Army of Tennessee unit) to his wife. Cover is
dated after the Fall of
Chattanooga to the Union during the time when the Chattanooga
postmaster
was travelling with the Army of Tennesee and using the Chattanooga CDS
to service the army mail. Known as the Chattanooga “Rover,”
this actually
represents an Army of Tennessee field cancel. Very Fine Cover. Cover
originally included in the exhibit to show the army field cancel usage.
This
cover was used as an illustration on Page 30 of Gen Bush’s Fancy and
Unusual Cancel book and again as an illustration on Page 166 of the
Collector’s Guide to Confederate Philately.
