| BLK19 | Trans-Atlantic Cover Hamburg, Germany to New Orleans, La Aug-Sep 1861. The cover is a folded letter complete in English concerning cotton. The letter is datelined Hamburg 24 July 1861 but was not posted until later in August with the red Hamburg postmark dated 21 AUG 1861. Red Aachen PAID 50cts transit mark on the face of the cover dated 23 AUG 1861 indicating that postage had been paid. Addressed to a business in New Orleans Care of Messers Walter & Corbutt, New York. Red “N. York Br. Pkt. 60 PAID” credit handstamp on the face of the cover dated 5 SEP (1861). Manuscript “Stmr from Liverpool” across the top. The only British sailing compatible with those dates was the Cunard packet “Arabia” which sailed from Liverpool on 24 AUG 1861 and arrived in Boston 5 SEP 1861. Cover could have been taken immediately by train from Boston to New York. There are no notations or markings to indicate that the letter ever made it to New Orleans as it arrived in New York after all through-the-lines overland express mail service had been suspended. Since the cover survives, the cover was very likely delivered to the New York forwarding agents and then sent on to New Orleans by the forwarding agents under a separate cover to Havanna and then by a blockade runner from Havanna to New Orleans or perhaps through Mexico to New Orleans. These routings to New Orleans through New York forwarding agents after the suspension of mails are known to have taken place with other covers. Cover has some edge wear and fold faults only apparent when the letter is unfolded. Very interesting cover which bears further research. | $500.00 |
