CSA #2 Paterson (very nice 4-Margin stamp) tied by a framed Grid cancel with no postmark. Endorsement at upper left "Capt Burke Berlin, Va." Coarse brown paper cover addressed to Mr. William H. Burke, Sharon PO, Taliaferro County, Geo. The Berlin, Va manuscript appears to be part of an endorsement and not a postal marking as there is no date. Berlin, Va is listed as a CSA post office in Southampton County. It is such an obscure place that it is not known if a grid was used at Berlin or not. It is possible that since Berlin, Va was already included on the cover by the sender that the postmaster simply canceled the stamp with a handy grid and did not add a date. The use of this stamp would speak against an army field cancel grid as the cover would be too early for that. The grid could also have been applied on receipt if the cover went through without the stamp being properly canceled.The only Capt Burke from Georgia listed with service in Virginia was Archibald T. Burke (1829-1882) Co F 7th Ga Inf. He may or may not have been the sender. He was wounded in the leg at First Manassas 7/21/1861 and resigned due to his wound 12/21/1861. He could still have been in Virginia recovering in the summer of 1862 as there is no further record. Therefore, the cover presents somewhat of an enigma as to the origin and application of this grid, but the best guess is that it is from Berlin, Va. Cover with just a little light foxing and a small reduction at the left where opened but still very clean and an absolutely beautiful stamp. Ex-Bush Old Exhibit.
