Gaius Whitfield (1804-1879) was an extremely wealthy planter who owned plantations in Marengo County, Ala and Lowndes County, Miss and is recorded as owning 500 slaves for his plantations in 1860. The Whitfield Family was large. Gaius had several sons who served in the Confederate Army as well as a number of other relatives who also served. Cover most likely sent by a soldier relative serving in an Alabama unit in Virginia since the vast majority of mail through Tudor Hall at this time was soldier's mail.
