William Henry Gist (1807-1874) was the pre-war Governor of South Carolina (1858-1860) and was a leading South Carolina secessionist. He was also the owner of the Rose Hill cotton plantation in Union County which today is a South Carolina State Historical Site open to the public with one of the best preserved plantation homes of the Old South.
