HB21 CSA #3 (4-Margin) tied by the large single rim Charleston SC CDS 25 APR 186(2). Oversized cover with Military Address to Surgeon M. W. Abney, 22nd SC Vols, Charleston SC (Drop Letter). Cover with just a little light foxing at the lower left corner and at the right edge. CSA Certificate 2000 notes that the cover has a vertical crease. The vertical crease mentioned on the certificate is very minor at the left center.

Matthew Wills Abney (1814-1885) entered service as the Asst Surgeon of the 24th SC Inf (Gist's Brigade)  11/1/1861. The regiment was on James Island April-June 1862. So the regimental designation in the address is incorrect. Dr Abney's eldest son, Joseph Matthew Adney (1842-1862) was killed at the Battle of Sharpsburg while serving as a Pvt with Co H 7th SC Inf. Another son, John Bay Abney (1845-1866), served as a Sergt in Co E 27th SC Inf and died of disease in 1866. The Abney family was very prominent in the Edgefield District of South Carolina.
