Mary Fries Patterson (1844-1927) married Rufus L. Patterson (1833-1879) in 1864. The Patterson family was very prominent in North Carolina as merchants, businessmen, and planters. There is no record of his having served in the Confederate Army as he was a North Carolina unionist. Her diary for 1863-1864 is archived at the University of North Carolina Special Collections Library.
