CSA #7 Pair
(4-Margin) tied by the small double circle BLUE Chester CH
SC CDS 9 FEB (1863). Addressed to Mrs Henry S. Fraser Care of
James H. Ladson Esqr, Aiken, So. Ca. Minor reduction at the
left
where opened not affecting anything, otherwise Very Fine.
The
addressee, Jane Eliza Ladson Fraser (1831-1882), was the wife of Dr
Henry DeSaussure Fraser (1828-1895). Dr. Fraser of Charleston
SC,
a graduate of the South Carolina Medical College in 1851, entered
Confederate service as an Assistant Surgeon in 1861. For much of the
war he served as Surgeon in Charge of the Third Army Corps ANV field
hospital and was on the staff of Gen A. P. Hill. Surgeon Fraser was
captured at Gettysburg and held as a POW until released five months
later. After the war, he returned to his practice in Charleston. The
cover is unlikely from Surgeon Fraser because of the handwriting but is
most likely from a friend or relative of Mrs. Fraser. |
