CSA #3 (4-Margin with a little edge nick at upper right) tied by the large single rim  Charleston SC CDS 1 JUL 186-. Military Address to Sgt V. Duc, James Island. James Island was part of the Charleston Harbor Defenses, so cover was treated as a Drop Letter. Cover not listed in the 2c Green Warren Survey. Small but complete cover with just a little light foxing. In July 1862, Virgil Duc is listed as a 2nd Lieut in Co E 25th SC Inf (Beauregard Light Infantry). The regiment was on James Island July-August 1862. He may have entered service as a Sergt and was quickly commissioned 2nd Lieut. Individual South Carolina Civil War soldier's records are notoriously sketchy.
