| AL424 | USA #26 tied by a full strike of the Montgomery, Ala CDS 14 MAR 1861 USA Used in CSA Alabama from the first capital of the Confederacy. Overall Advertising Cover in Gray and White for Montgomery Hall (a Montgomery Hotel) with a picture of the building. Cover from the Alexander H. Stephens Correspondence addressed to Hon A. H. Stephens, Savannah, Georgia. Stephens was in Savannah at that time to promote the new Confederate Government and the Confederate Constitution. He delivered his famous “Cornerstone” speech in Savannah on March 21, 1861. Usual short summary on the back “Sam D. Varner Montgomery wants recommendation for clerkship in Post Office Department Mrch 8 61.” Backflap is intact and has not been removed. Small edge repairs at bottom gives the cover a very clean appearance. Scarce overall hotel advertising cover from the Stephens Correspondence in the early days of the Confederacy. | $1,500.00 |
